Depends what it is and what their views are and how strong everyone’s views are.

Sometimes you will never get someone to agree with you.
Other times you can use gentle persuasion or just clear explanations to get agreement.

When I finish an experiment, I write up a report which I then try to publish in a science magazine (read by other scientists). When you send your report, it’s is read in secret by lots of other scientists first, and they try to find any problems with it (they basically mark your work). They won’t let you publish your report until they’re happy your experiment is right. It can sometimes be very hard to get them to agree with you, if you think you’re right and they think you’re wrong. Sometimes this means that you have to do more experiments to make them happy!

It sounds hard (it is), but it means that the reports that do get published have been checked by at least a few scientists, and so should be better.

As I’m still a PhD student, I’m still learning the ropes of what it’s like to do research. I’ve only had a couple of ideas so far but it wasn’t too difficult getting people to agree with me, as long as I could explain why I wanted to work on my idea. 🙂
