For a long time I worked on how to make bendy smartphone screens (recently some companies have announced they’ve made fold-up smartphones, which use the same technology), but after a while I wanted to do something new. I’ve always liked biology, so looked for jobs where I could use my existing skills with biology.

In my current job I use the same skills I learnt while making bendy smartphone screens, to make the spiky needles (it’s the same way computer chips are made). This meant I got to work with biologists a lot, and as I did I really enjoyed learning more about how cells work. Everything was so new, and there’s so much we still don’t really understand properly. I think as a scientist, I love it when there’s something unknown to explore, so over time I’ve become more and more interested in understanding how cells work.
