Hi, I spend most of my working time in predicting or (hopefully) forecasting natural hazards, in particular landslides.
Up to now, I was never able to reduce the casualties of these events that sometimes show no premonitory signs at all (especially for earthquakes), however my group (the Earth Observation team) is accomplishing every day small steps towards a better understanding of natural phenomena and reduce, if not avoid, negative impact on livelihood and infrastructures.
This is also possible thanks to the massive amount of new satellite data and computer processing power available nowadays.
