Until very recently you had to do a degree in another subject (I did radiography) then get a post-graduate course in ultrasound. I spent some time at college and some in the hospital, so I learnt the theory and also then put that into practice working with patients.
Now we are developing a new career framework and there are BSc (Hons) degrees in ultrasound.
On the course we teach about how to use the machine safely, how to communicate with patients and then anatomy, technique, what’s normal, what’ s abnormal and how to make a diagnosis.
I didn’t really learn about it at uni! But I know that some coursemates who did Neuroscience, as I did, learned about medical imaging, such as ultrasound and CT scans and PET scans.
