      They come in a great range of sizes. My data was taken with telescopes that have mirrors which are approximately 2.5-metres wide (the bigger the mirror – the more light you get – the better the data). The Hubble Telescope in space is actually around the same size but because it observes from space where the Earth’s atmosphere isn’t in the way, it can see much better than the telescopes on Earth.

      Some of the best telescopes on Earth are much bigger, and the biggest telescope in the world is currently being built in Chile in South America. It will be 39-metres! It’s called the ELT (Extremely Large Telescope – astronomers are very creative with their names). 😉
