Question: can humans communicate with animals

From what I see daily, humans communicate with animals. I live in a place where i see people use donkeys for transporting items over short distances. These donkeys are spoken to in words they understand. They know when they are to stop, and when they should start moving again. Same case dogs learn from humans and can take up activities with instructions. However this involves training and use of rewards to help the dogs take instructions.
